Last Wednesday commissioners DeCiccio, Weaver, and Sullivan voted for a chicken ordinance that will legalize your neighbor having a 7-foot-tall chicken coop in their rear or side yard with up to four chickens. Leary and Cooper voted no. The initial ordinance was amended so that approval of neighbors is not required to receive a chicken coop permit. The ordinance will sunset 24 months from adoption and allows up to 25 permits. They vote again on September 9th.

Post Script #1 – DeCiccio, Weaver, and Sullivan also voted to have city staff draft an ordinance for a March referendum on changing Winter Park from at-large to single member district voting. Staff’s count of those speaking in support of this ordinance was 7, of whom 3 did not live in Winter Park. Leary and Cooper voted no.
Post Script#2 – Your emails, signs, and calls on the voted tax increase seem to be having an impact. There is a preliminary vote on September 9th and the final millage rate vote is on September 23rd.
No. It is inappropriate to have chicken coops in Winter Park. This is an urban area.
My husband and I attend a church near Lee Rd. and Adanson Rd. where we have a large campus. There we maintain a community garden and chicken coop to give eggs and vegetables to our neighbors.
Chickens require DAILY care – feed, cleaning of coop etc
Some have a very romantic idea about what fun it is to have chickens – they require a lot of work and knowledgable care to keep the hens and the area healthy and safe for the neighbors.
Urban farming is good! I hope this happens.
